Heart Disease in Australia

  • Cardiovascular disease (CVD) kills more Australians than any other disease group. In 2002 there were 50,294 deaths (37.6% of all deaths) due to CVD 32 , 33 .
  • Around 3.67 million Australians are affected by stroke, heart and vascular diseases 33 .
  • CVD is the most expensive health condition in Australia, accounting for 11% or 4 billion dollars of the total allocated health system expenditure in 2000-01 34 .
  • 51% of Australian adults (6.4 million) have high blood cholesterol and 30% (3.69 million) have high blood pressure 33 .

  • Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in New Zealand accounting for 40% of all deaths 35 .
